A disaster recovery plan you can actually execute

A DR plan turns “we need to restore it” into a defined sequence of systems, owners, target times and previously tested actions.

01

1. Define recovery objectives

Business impact determines recovery priority.

  • Inventory critical services and data
  • RTO: target time to restore service
  • RPO: tolerable data loss

02

2. Document the path back

A backup alone is not a complete recovery plan.

  • Dependencies across identity, network, applications and data
  • Recovery sequence and step owners
  • Access, keys, contacts and replacement infrastructure

03

3. Test and measure

The plan must survive an exercise.

  • Safe restore test
  • Measure actual time against RTO
  • Update the procedure from observed gaps

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is backup the same as disaster recovery?

No. Backup supplies data; DR also covers sequence, infrastructure, identities, dependencies, ownership and service return.

Should every system have the same RTO?

No. Objectives should reflect outage impact and the cost of faster recovery.

How do we know the plan works?

Run a controlled exercise, measure the real outcome and record deviations.

Have backups but no verified route back to service?

HeroIT can turn backup capability into a measurable recovery scenario.
